NYC Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

During the aging process, many people develop stubborn, localized pockets of fat that are resistant to changes in diet and exercise.

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body such as the abdomen, back, arms, legs, and buttocks. Also known as liposculpting, this procedure uses small, stainless steel tubes called cannulas that suction out subcutaneous fat cells using a vacuum pump or syringe.

What liposuction does

The number of fat cells in the body is stabilized during adolescence and remains the same during adulthood. The cells may swell with weight gain and shrink with weight loss, but the total number stays stable even as weight fluctuates. Fat cells are also fixed, meaning they cannot move around in the body.

Liposuction procedures permanently remove fat cells from the body. These cells will not grow back, even if the patient gains weight after the surgery.  Remaining fat cells will shrink or grow in size with weight loss or gain.

What liposuction does not do

Liposuction is not considered a weight-loss procedure, and having liposuction does not mean patients will not gain weight in the future. If a liposuction patient does gain weight, the removed fat cells mean the treated area may remain slimmer than the rest of the body. But fat cells in other areas of the body may experience a greater increase in size than they did previously.

Sometimes liposuction results in skin shrinking back to match the reduced size of treated areas. Liposuction alone does not, however, remove sagging, loose skin or reduce the appearance of stretch marks and other skin imperfections. If the skin at the treatment site has been distended for an extended period of time, or if the skin has poor elasticity, a skin lift procedure can be added to remove excess skin.

Types of Liposuction

Modern liposuction has been a developing treatment area for nearly 50 years. Over time, a variety of techniques suited to a variety of procedure types and body areas have been developed.

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the most effective, safest method of liposuction. This technique can be performed under local anesthesia (as opposed to general anesthesia) and has a shorter recovery time than other liposuction techniques.

Tumescent liposuction is performed by injecting a sterile solution containing lidocaine (a local anesthetic), epinephrine (to constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding risk), and saline (a carrier liquid) into the treatment area. After the solution is injected, tiny stainless steel tubes called cannulas are inserted into the fat deposits under the skin. These cannulas are attached to a suction vacuum that will pull out the targeted fat.

Laser-assisted liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction is a minimally invasive liposuction technique done under local anesthesia that melts fat with a laser before removing it via a suction cannula.

Traditional liposuction

In traditional liposuction, cannulas are inserted into tiny incisions across the surgical site while the patient is under general anesthesia. The cannula is gently moved back and forth to loosen and separate fat cells from the dermal layers, after which they are suctioned out.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Ultrasound liposuction uses ultrasound waves to break down fat cells, making them easier to extract through traditional liposuction methods.

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?

Liposuction is capable of removing large, but not excessive, amounts of fat. It is generally safe to remove up to 5000mL during a single liposuction treatment.

The final determination of how much fat to remove depends on the patient’s body mass index (BMI), overall health, the area being treated, and whether other procedures are involved.

Liposuction FAQs

How much do you charge for liposuction surgery?

The price for liposuction surgery depends on the amount of liposuction needed and whether or not liposuction is combined with other procedures like a tummy tuck, arm lift, or back lift. After your initial consultation with Dr. Maman, our specialized surgical coordinators will provide you with an itemized price quote.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction surgery?

Although meeting with Dr. Maman is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for a liposuction procedure, patients who are generally healthy non-smokers and who have localized fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise qualify for liposuction.

Will my liposuction be permanent?

Liposuction surgery is considered a permanent surgery, but it is important to know that treated areas can change size and shape as you age or if you gain or lose significant amounts of weight.

Surgical Procedure FAQs

Where will my surgery be performed? How long does liposuction surgery take?

Dr. Maman usually performs liposuction surgeries at an in-office, AAAASF-certified facility or an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital. We work with you to select the best facility for your needs.

Liposuction takes approximately one to two hours. Combining liposuction with another procedure like a breast lift or tummy tuck will add to total time in the operating room.

Can I combine my liposuction surgery with other surgical procedures?

While it depends on the procedure and the patient, the answer is generally yes. Combining procedures can minimize overall recovery time and reduce costs. Dr. Maman will work with you to find the best way to achieve your cosmetic goals with the least amount of operating time so you can get back to living your life.

Post-Surgery Questions

What does liposuction recovery look like?

It is normal to experience discomfort, fluid retention, bruising, and swelling after a liposuction procedure. Pain can be managed with prescription and over-the-counter medications.

We recommend wearing the compressive garments we provide for up to six weeks to help reduce swelling and encourage healing.

How long does liposuction recovery take?

Patients generally return to work and home life within one to two weeks of surgery and normal activities within four to six weeks. Full recovery is usually achieved by three months.

When can I work out after liposuction?

It is important to remember that feeling recovered is not the same as being fully healed. In order to maintain your results and ensure proper healing, we recommend slowly easing back into a fitness routine only after being cleared by Dr. Maman, usually after two to four weeks.

How do I treat scars after surgery?

Dr. Maman will provide you with detailed scar-treatment protocols, medical-grade creams, and tapes to minimize your scarring.

Will the surgery require follow-up visits?

Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-operative visits, whether they are part of your detailed follow-up plan during the first year after surgery or the annual visits that we recommend to ensure your final results are maintained.
