The nose is a significant focal point of the face. The shape and size of the nose can impact the appearance and balance of other facial attributes. For example, a large nose can make your cheeks appear bigger or eyes smaller. Makeup has come a long way in terms of contouring, but depending on your specific issues, you may prefer a more permanent fix that can restore balance to the entire face. Many find that simple changes to the nose can completely alter one’s look for the better, so they seek options for plastic surgery.
What is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly called a “nose job”, is surgery on the nose that can target the bridge and width of the nose, the nasal tip, and the nostrils. All can be addressed and shaped to better flatter your overall look. The complaints that are most often addressed are the dorsal hump, nasal width, asymmetry, a prominent nasal tip, or a drooping nasal tip.
Many patients seek plastic surgery in New York for more than just cosmetic reasons. A rhinoplasty can also help people with medical concerns, such as an obstructed airway due to a deviated septum or internal valve collapse, or post-traumatic deformities. A deviated septum creates a type of breathing impairment that reduces airflow and causes breathing issues, in which case rhinoplasty can make drastic improvements.
Anyone with concerns about their nose’s form or function is a potential candidate for a rhinoplasty. The best candidates are healthy, non-smokers who understand the process and have realistic expectations.
Dr. Maman will discuss your goals, questions, and procedure in great detail during your consultation and preoperative appointments. He will conduct a physical examination during your initial visit and will address your medical and surgical history to have a comprehensive understanding of your needs. Dr. Maman will discuss with you your treatment plan, thoroughly exploring all your options, and help you identify realistic and reasonable goals.
During your procedure, you will receive general anesthesia so that you do not feel any pain. The surgery itself typically takes 2-3 hours. Dr. Maman will make a small incision either inside the nose or along the columella. The incision allows the skin covering your nose to be raised, exposing underlying bones and cartilage which are then manipulated. The procedure can follow different techniques. If you want to reduce the size of your nose or to decrease the width of the bridge, parts of the bone may be wholly removed. In some cases, Dr. Maman will add cartilage, sourcing it from the nose or other parts of the body.
To fix a deviated septum, the structures of the nose will be straightened and anything internal that impairs breathing will be corrected. After closing the incisions, your nose will be splinted and protected with gauze and bandages.
Results and Recovery
Rhinoplasty is a permanent procedure so that you can enjoy the results immediately. However, it will take several days of recovery for swelling to subside enough to remove the splint. Most patients report reduced swelling within one to two weeks and have an overall positive experience with plastic surgery in New York.
Rhinoplasty for both cosmetic and medical reasons is a standard procedure where risks and adverse side effects are rare. It is essential to follow the recovery instructions from Dr. Maman so that you can watch for potential complications and ensure an optimal outcome. Dr. Maman will work with you to ensure a successful recovery period with follow-up appointments as needed. Scarring will naturally occur but will be hidden and likely diminish as time goes on. Any scars will be managed following Dr. Maman’s post-procedure protocol.
Total recovery for rhinoplasty is longer than other surgeries. It is common to experience prolonged swelling for up to one year, which tends to come and go, mostly during the morning after sleeping. Your nose will also need time to settle into its new shape. Along the way, you may notice slight changes in your nose as it adheres permanently to its new appearance. You also may find slight changes in the shape of your nose as a natural response to the aging process. Significant changes, although rare, may require additional surgery.
