What is a Body Lift?

Weight loss, pregnancy, age, sun damage, or a genetic tendency towards poor skin elasticity can result in loose skin, which is sometimes accompanied by unwanted subcutaneous fat.

Body lift surgery is designed to remove excess skin and fat from multiple areas of the body, tighten underlying tissue, and eliminate discomfort.

Why consider a body lift?

Lax, sagging skin is easily irritated, prone to infection, and can limit range of motion. A body lift can help by eliminating excess skin and fat.

This procedure is often sought by patients who have lost significant amounts of weight, either through diet and exercise or by undergoing bariatric weight loss surgery (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or LAP-BAND). It is sometimes referred to as a belt lipectomy because incisions extend like a belt around the entire body.

Types of Body Lifts

The type of body lift a patient has will be determined by multiple factors, including age, health,  problem areas, and desired body contour.

Lower body lift

A lower body lift is used to correct skin laxity and fat of the lower extremities. This body lift technique, also called a belt-line lift or a 360 tummy tuck, is done by removing excess skin, fatty tissue, and cellulite from a patient’s torso and lower extremities (hips, thighs, and buttocks).

Procedures used in a lower body lift can include a tummy tuck, a thigh lift, a buttock lift, and liposuction.

Upper body lift

An upper body lift, also known as a bra-line lift, involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper back, the sides of the chest, the arms, and, if desired, the breasts. This procedure can be performed on both men and women.

Some patients may choose to undergo a tummy tuck along with their upper body lift, but recommendations regarding surgery combinations are made on a case-by-case basis. Combining an upper body lift with a tummy tuck creates a significantly more invasive procedure, and in some cases, these two surgeries will yield better results when not performed together.

Total body lift

A total body lift uses techniques from upper body and lower body lifts. This surgery is one of the most involved plastic surgery procedures offered today. If you are a candidate for a total body lift, Dr. Maman will work with you to create a schedule of surgery that safely delivers the desired results, often involving multiple separate procedures.

Body Lift FAQs

Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation revision?

Although meeting with Dr. Maman is the best way to determine eligibility for body lift surgery, patients who have lost 30–50% of their body weight and have loose skin around their stomach, thighs, and buttocks who are in good health and are non-smokers are good candidates for this procedure.

How much do you charge for body lift surgery?

Each patient receives a customized treatment plan that is specific to their individual needs. The cost of body lift surgery depends on what type of body lift procedures are part of your surgical plan. During your initial consultation, Dr. Maman will conduct a detailed assessment of your goals. Afterward, you will receive an itemized price quote to help you make your decision.

Surgical Procedure FAQs

Where will my surgery be performed? How long will it take?

Dr. Maman usually performs surgeries at an in-office, AAAASF-certified facility or an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital. We work with you to select the best facility for your needs.

All body lift surgeries are major procedures that take between four and six hours.

What will my incisions look like, and where will they be?

Incision placement is dependent on which procedures are performed. Because a body lift involves large areas of the body, you will have multiple incisions. Dr. Maman will make sure these incisions are made either in the natural folds and contours of your body or in an area usually covered by clothing.

Potential scar locations include:

  • Arm lift (brachioplasty): on the underside of the arm from the armpit to above the elbow

  • Breast lift (mastopexy): around the areola and then vertically down to the breast fold and horizontally across the breast fold
  • Back lift (horizontal torsoplasty): across the mid-back, easily hidden by a bra strap
  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): hip to hip along the bikini line
  • Thigh lift (thighplasty): from the groin backwards to the crease of the buttocks
  • Buttocks lift (gluteal lift): hip to hip across the lower back at the top of the buttocks
  • Liposuction: tiny, nearly invisible dots about the size of a freckle

Scar appearance can be minimized by following Dr. Maman’s post-operative guidelines and using the medical-grade creams he prescribes.

Can I combine my body lift surgery with other procedures?

A body lift is already a combination of multiple procedures. Additional procedures are not generally recommended so as not to put additional pressure on the body as it heals from the body lift.

Post-Surgery FAQs

How long does body lift surgery recovery take?

While the first few days after a body lift surgery can be difficult, most patients who undergo body lift surgery find they can stand up straight and return to work within two weeks. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are to be expected for the first two weeks after surgery. Protective bandages should be worn for approximately four weeks, and full recovery is usually achieved within six weeks of surgery.

It is important to note that even after restrictions are lifted, it can take up to one year for scars to soften and flatten and all results to permanently settle.

When will I see results from my body lift and how long will they last?

A body lift is a surgery with immediately visible results that will continue to improve as the healing process progresses.

Body lifts are considered permanent procedures, but it is important to maintain a healthy weight after your surgery. Significant weight gain can stretch skin and create new fatty deposits that will alter results.

How long after surgery do I have to wait to exercise?

A body lift involves all major muscle groups in the trunk and upper legs, which means it is important to allow the body adequate time to heal. Exercise and heavy lifting must be avoided for four weeks post-operatively.

After Dr. Maman clears you to begin exercising again, it is important to begin slowly. Our office will recommend appropriate activities to help you ease back into a fitness program, reduce tightness from scarring, and maintain results.

Will I have to pay for follow-up visits after my surgery?

Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-operative visits, whether they are part of your detailed follow-up plan during the first year after surgery or the annual visits that we recommend to ensure your results are maintained.
