Body Lift

Extra fat and skin of the extremities is a common complaint of patients, one that is often met with frustration over issues like saggy arms or bulky thighs. As fat accumulates on the body due to weight gain, pregnancy, aging, or genetics, patients often inquire about potential solutions and plastic surgery in New York. Liposuction works to remove excess fat, although not everyone has the necessary elasticity in their skin to accomplish their desired look. When fat expands, your skin stretches. Time and aging can also significantly reduce the skin’s ability to bounce back. A body lift is a great solution to re-tighten that skin.

What is a Body Lift?

A body lift is the surgical removal of excess skin and fat from areas that would not be addressed with an abdominoplasty alone. This procedure removes any clusters of fat and consequent sagging skin, which is then redraped to create a more toned and firm appearance. Dr. Maman ensures that the resulting contoured shape complements the natural proportions of the body.

Most patients desire a smooth look to their body, one without dimply skin. A body lift can help reduce fat and excess skin in patients who have experienced drastic shifts in weight over time. Anyone who struggles with these insecurities is a potential candidate for a body lift and plastic surgery in New York. The best candidates are healthy, non-smokers who understand the process and have realistic expectations.

The Procedure

Consultation

Dr. Maman will discuss your goals, questions, and procedure in great detail during your consultation and preoperative appointments. He will conduct a physical examination during your initial visit and will address your medical and surgical history to have a comprehensive understanding of your needs. Dr. Maman will discuss with you your treatment plan, thoroughly exploring all your options, and help you identify realistic and reasonable goals.

Surgery

During your procedure, you will receive general anesthesia so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. The surgery itself usually takes about 6 hours. Body lifts require incisions, which are usually placed in areas that can hide scarring. Dr. Maman will use different techniques and incisions according to the issues he is addressing, which will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation. For surgery on the leg, the incisions are placed on the inner side or in natural creases along the thighs. Arms are best addressed with Brachioplasty or arm lift. These incisions are placed along the underarm. When addressing the abdomen, Dr. Maman will likely perform an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck where incisions will be placed in areas hidden under clothing, such as above the groin.

Results and Recovery

Body lifts are permanent, and results are immediate. Because the body will experience swelling, compression garments and drains will work to help the body contour its new shape and reduce fluid retention. Dr. Maman will also give you any necessary pain medication and show you how to care for any necessary drainage. After about one to two weeks, you can remove the bandages and enjoy your new look. Scarring will naturally occur but will be hidden and likely diminish as time goes on. Any scars will be managed following Dr. Maman’s post-procedure protocol.

Body lifts have the same risks as other surgeries, such as bleeding, infection, and scarring. However, Dr. Maman will work with you to ensure a successful recovery period with follow-up appointments as needed. You will be provided with all postoperative care instructions and garments to promote healing and ensure an optimal experience with plastic surgery in New York.

It is best to relax as much as possible during the first few days after the procedure. You may experience some difficulty standing up straight for a week or two after surgery and should not attempt to stand straight. As you heal and use your muscles with time, the tightness will gradually soften. Patients can typically return to work and their normal routine after two weeks. Exercise and lifting of heavy objects are not permitted until four weeks after surgery. Dr. Maman will clearly advise you as to the appropriate activity level throughout your recovery. Complete recovery with no restrictions typically comes at 6 weeks after surgery.

You will need to practice a healthy lifestyle to maintain the shape of your body post-surgery. Although body lifts permanently remove excess fat and skin, remaining fat can grow and cause the skin to stretch and sag once again. Regular exercise will help prevent or prolong that from happening.
