A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat, improves the appearance of stretch marks, and repairs loose abdominal muscles resulting from pregnancy, dramatic weight loss, or aging.

What Causes Abdominal Bulges
Stomach bulges can be caused by unyielding fat deposits, excess skin, and damaged stomach rectus muscles resulting from significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the natural, age-related decrease of collagen and skin elasticity.
Lower abdominal bulges are famously resistant to diet and exercise—even patients who eat well and exercise regularly can fail to see their desired results.
Diastasis Recti
Pregnancy and major weight gain can stretch the abdominal wall until the connective tissue holding the vertical stomach muscles together—the linea alba—is damaged or torn, resulting in a bulge or gap down the midline of the abdomen.
A tummy tuck closes this gap by suturing the two rectus muscles together, resulting in a well-contoured stomach.
Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck
Your belly button is key to deciding which procedure you need. Patients with sagging skin and excess fat both above and below the belly button need a traditional tummy tuck, which uses a hip-to-hip incision below the bikini line plus one around the belly button so it can be repositioned after extra skin is removed.
For patients with sagging skin and excess fat only below the belly button, Dr. Maman may recommend a more limited or “mini” tummy tuck, which uses a slightly smaller incision above the pubic bone.
Liposuction
Liposuction is often used in tandem with a tummy tuck to remove localized fat pockets. For some patients, liposuction alone may be enough; for patients with loose or hanging skin, however, liposuction alone is usually not enough.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure and is most effective when you are at or close to your ideal weight. While results are long-lasting, post-operative weight gain or pregnancy can lessen the effect.
Results & Recovery
We take every measure to provide the highest degree of comfort throughout your tummy tuck and recovery. To reduce the risk of complications, we require all abdominoplasty patients to stay in New York City for close monitoring for one full day after surgery, and Dr. Maman may also arrange for a specialized aesthetic nurse to stay with you for 24–48 hours.
We schedule multiple pre-op appointments so our patients are fully informed and know exactly what to expect, and we stay in close contact during the pre-op period to ensure prompt, personalized care.

How much do you charge for a tummy tuck?
Each patient is unique, so treatment plans and pricing vary from person to person. Dr. Maman will conduct a detailed assessment of your goals in your initial consultation and provide an itemized price quote to help you make your decision.
Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
If you have extra skin on your abdomen, localized fat pockets resistant to diet and exercise, and weak or bulging stomach muscles caused by diastasis recti, you are a candidate. Healthy, non-smoking patients within 10% of a healthy weight generally have the best results.
Should I have a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck?
Dr. Maman can help you determine which option is best, but generally a mini tummy tuck is best if you have a minimal amount of excess skin and fat located below your belly button only. Patients needing work across the entire abdomen will usually require a full tummy tuck.
Where will my surgery be performed? How long will it take?
Dr. Maman performs abdominoplasty at an in-office, AAAASF-certified facility or an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital.
Traditional tummy tucks usually take 3.0–3.5 hours; mini tummy tucks take 1.5–2 hours. Combining procedures may lengthen your time in the operating room.
What will my incisions look like, and where will they be?
Both full and mini tummy tucks require an incision across the lower abdomen—hip to hip for a full tummy tuck, and slightly shorter for a mini. In either case the incision sits below the bikini line so it can be hidden by clothing. Dr. Maman keeps scars as low and short as possible, and careful adherence to our scar-treatment protocols further lessens scarring.
Can I combine my tummy tuck with other procedures?
Generally, yes—depending on the procedures involved. Tummy tucks are most often combined with liposuction, but breast augmentation and breast lifts are common add-ons as well. Combining procedures can minimize overall recovery time, reduce costs, and avoid an extended disruption to your life.
How long will my recovery period be?
Abdominoplasty is an invasive procedure that requires careful adherence to activity restrictions for proper healing. We recommend taking at least eight to ten days before returning to work and other strenuous activities. Swelling lessens dramatically after six weeks, and most patients are fully healed in 10–12 weeks.
How long do I have to wait after surgery to work out?
Because abdominal muscles are key to most exercise, it is important to wait about four to six weeks before intense workouts. Spinning, stretching, and fast walking are permitted after two to three weeks.
Will I need special clothes after my surgery?
We provide custom compression garments to speed recovery and reduce pain. Most patients prefer to wear loose-fitting, soft clothing for the first two weeks.
How long will my tummy tuck last?
A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin but cannot prevent fat from building up again and re-stretching your skin—though the changes are permanent. Maintaining your results depends largely on a stable weight with a healthy diet and moderate exercise.
Will I have to pay for follow-up visits after my surgery?
Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-operative visits—whether they’re part of your detailed first-year follow-up plan or the annual visits we recommend to ensure your results are maintained.
