What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat, improves the appearance of stretch marks, and repairs loose abdominal muscles resulting from pregnancy, dramatic weight loss, or aging.

What Causes Abdominal Bulges

Stomach bulges can be caused by unyielding fat deposits, excess skin, and damaged stomach rectus muscles resulting from significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the decrease of collagen and skin elasticity that is part of the natural aging process.

Lower abdominal bulges are famously frustrating for their resistance to diet and exercise. Even patients who regularly exercise and maintain a healthy diet can still fail to see their desired results.

Diastasis Recti

Pregnancy and major weight gain can stretch the abdominal wall muscles until the connective tissue holding the vertical stomach muscles together, the linea alba, is damaged or torn, resulting in a bulge or gap down the midline of the abdomen.

A tummy tuck surgery closes this gap by suturing the two rectus muscles together, resulting in a well-contoured stomach.

Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck

It may surprise you, but your belly button is key to deciding what type of abdominoplasty procedure you need.

Patients who have sagging skin and excess fat both above and below the belly button need a traditional tummy tuck, which requires a hip-to-hip incision across the lower abdomen (below the bikini line) and another around the belly button, allowing it to be repositioned after extra skin is removed.

For patients who have sagging skin and excess fat only below the belly button, Dr. Maman may recommend a more limited tummy tuck or a “mini” tummy tuck. Mini tummy tucks use a slightly smaller incision above the pubic bone. Whether or not the incision needs to be deep enough to provide access to the abdominal muscles is determined by whether or not there is pronounced diastasis recti or a hernia involved.

Liposuction

Liposuction is used in tandem with a tummy tuck procedure to remove localized fat packets. For some patients, liposuction alone may be enough to achieve the desired results. For patients with loose or hanging skin, however, liposuction alone is often not enough.

One note — a tummy tuck is not the same as a weight loss procedure and is generally most effective if you are at or close to your ideal weight. While abdominoplasty can deliver long-term results, post-operative weight gain or pregnancy can lessen the effect.

Results & Recovery

We take every measure to provide the highest degree of comfort for our patients throughout their tummy tuck and recovery. To reduce the risk of complications, we require all our abdominoplasty patients to stay in New York City for close monitoring for one full day after surgery. Dr. Maman may also have a specialized aesthetic nurse stay with you for 24-48 hours.

We schedule multiple pre-op appointments to make sure that our patients are fully informed and know exactly what to expect from the procedure. We also stay in close contact during the pre-op period in order to ensure that each patient receives prompt and personalized care.

Basic Tummy Tuck FAQs

How much do you charge for a tummy tuck?

Each patient is unique, which means treatment plans and pricing vary from person to person. Dr. Maman will conduct a detailed assessment of your goals in your initial consultation and provide you with an itemized price quote to help you make your decision.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

If you have extra skin on your abdomen, localized fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, and weak or bulging stomach muscles caused by diastasis recti, you are a candidate for a tummy tuck. Healthy, non-smoking patients within 10% of a healthy weight generally have the best results.

Should I have a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck?

Dr. Maman can help you determine which option is best for you, but generally, a mini tummy tuck is best if you have a minimal amount of excess skin and fat located below your belly button only. Patients needing work across their entire abdomen will probably require a full tummy tuck.

Where will my surgery be performed? How long will it take?

Dr. Maman performs abdominoplasty surgeries at an in-office, AAAASF-certified facility or an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital. We work with you to select the best facility for your needs.

Traditional tummy tucks usually take 3.0–3.5 hours, and mini tummy tucks take 1.5–2 hours. If you are combining your abdominoplasty with other procedures, your total time in the operating room may be longer.

What will my incisions look like, and where will they be?

Both tummy tucks and mini tummy tucks require an incision across the lower abdomen. In a full tummy tuck, the incision runs from hip to hip, while mini tummy tucks use a slightly shorter incision. In either case, the incision will be below the bikini line so it can be hidden by clothing. You will notice in our gallery photos that Dr. Maman’s scars are all as low and short as possible.  You can lessen scarring by carefully following our scar treatment protocols.

A full tummy tuck also requires an incision around your belly button. These scars are typically only minimally visible.

Can I combine my tummy tuck with other procedures?

While it depends on what type of procedures you are hoping to combine, the answer is generally yes. Tummy tucks are most often combined with liposuction, but breast augmentation and breast lifts are also common add-ons. Combining procedures can minimize overall recovery time, reduce costs, and avoid an extended disruption to your life.

How long will my recovery period be?

Abdominoplasty is an invasive procedure that requires careful adherence to activity restrictions for proper healing. We recommend taking at least eight to ten days before you return to work and other strenuous activities. Swelling in your stomach will lessen dramatically after six weeks, and most patients are fully healed in 10-12 weeks.

How long do I have to wait after my surgery to work out?

Because abdominal muscles are key to most types of exercise, it is important to wait about four to six weeks before engaging in intense exercising.  Spinning, stretching, fast walking is permitted after two to three weeks.

Will I need special clothes after my surgery?

We will provide you with custom compression garments to help speed your recovery and reduce your pain. Most patients prefer to wear loose-fitting, soft clothing for the first two weeks.

How long will my tummy tuck last?

Tummy tucks remove excess fat and skin but cannot prevent fat from building up again and re-stretching your skin. However, the changes are permanent.  Maintaining the aesthetic results from your tummy tuck depends in large part on maintaining a stable weight with a healthy diet and moderate exercise.

Will I have to pay for follow-up visits after my surgery?

Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-operative visits, whether they are part of your detailed follow-up plan during the first year after surgery or the annual visits that we recommend to ensure your results are maintained.
