Fillers
What are fillers?
As people age, the subcutaneous fat that makes skin look full starts to thin and deteriorate. Additionally, the aging process causes the body to produce less and lower-quality collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that give skin volume and allow it to snap back to its original shape after stretching.
Dermal fillers are injectable, gel-like substances used to restore lost volume in areas of the face susceptible to drooping, fine lines, and wrinkles. This gel is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the human body. This minimizes the risk of adverse reactions from treatment. Fillers can also be used to improve the harmony of facial contours. Areas where dermal fillers are effective include:
- Nasolabial folds
- Tear trough
- Smile lines
- Marionette lines
- Facial wrinkles
- Nose
- Cheeks
- Under-eye area
- Chin
- Jawline
Other non-surgical treatments, such as Botox, can be used in combination with fillers.
Fillers can help prolong the youthful appearance of the skin, but the solution is temporary. If wrinkles and volume loss are significantly pronounced, or if fillers no longer deliver the desired result, facial rejuvenation surgeries such as a facelift or fat transfer may be recommended.
Types of Fillers
Dr. Maman uses several brands of hyaluronic acid fillers, including Restylane and Juvéderm. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body’s connective tissue, but the hyaluronic acid used in skincare is usually created through biosynthesis.
Some of the most popular fillers that consistently deliver superior results are:
- Juvéderm Voluma XC: used to restore volume to the cheek and mid-face
- Juvéderm Volbella: used to define and augment lips and smooth wrinkles around the mouth
- Juvéderm Vollure: used to reduce the appearance of severe facial wrinkles and folds in the lower face
Who can deliver injectable fillers?
Injecting fillers is not invasive, but it is also not a risk-free procedure. Improper use of dermal fillers can deliver unnatural results that make the skin look plastic or over-filled. Other complications include:
- Lumps at the injection site
- Asymmetry
- Bruising
- Rash, redness, and swelling
- Skin necrosis (skin death)
Although many states allow master estheticians and medical spa employees to inject fillers, a skilled plastic surgeon who has undergone years of rigorous training is more qualified to help patients avoid potential complications and deliver the best possible results.

Filler FAQs
How much do you charge for fillers?
A treatment plan involving fillers is carefully individualized to each patient based on their long-term goals and medical history. Because we customize treatment for each patient, pricing can vary. During your initial consultation, Dr. Maman will conduct a detailed assessment. Afterward, you will receive an itemized price quote to help you make your decision.
Am I a good candidate for fillers?
The best candidates for fillers are generally healthy non-smokers looking for mild to moderate improvement in the symmetry or volume of their face or a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
While fillers do not involve surgery, some conditions and medications can adversely affect your results.
Meeting with Dr. Maman is the best way to determine whether fillers are the right treatment option for you or whether another technique will be better able to deliver your desired results.
Where will my procedure be performed? How long will it take?
Dr. Maman usually delivers injectable fillers at an in-office, AAAASF-certified facility or an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital. We work with you to select the best facility for your needs.
Injecting fillers usually takes approximately 45 minutes in our office.
Do fillers hurt?
Injecting fillers is not particularly painful, but pain can be reduced using topical anesthetics and ice.
How long is the recovery period for fillers?
The amount of time required for recovery is minimal but depends on the amount and type of filler used. Dr. Maman will give you instructions specific to your treatment plan, but patients should expect to avoid heavy exercise, saunas and other warm environments, and excessive sunlight for 24–48 hours after injection.
It is normal to see minor bruising, swelling, or lumpiness for up to 7–10 days after your procedure. These symptoms can be reduced with the use of ice packs. Fillers take some time to settle and it may take up to three weeks to see the final results.
How long do I have to wait to work out after receiving fillers?
Exercise increases the likelihood of the filler failing or migrating beyond the desired treatment area. We recommend patients remain upright for several hours after their procedure and avoid exercise for at least 24 hours.
How long will my fillers last?
Fillers generally last between nine and twelve months.
Will I have to pay for follow-up visits after my procedure?
Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-procedure follow-up visits.
