What is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift surgery creates a more lifted, youthful appearance by reshaping breast tissue, tightening or removing skin, and in some cases adding volume.
Breast changes can happen as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or age-related decreases in skin elasticity and collagen. A breast lift (mastopexy) procedure is employed to tighten and restore breast shape by creating new forms with breast skin and breast tissue.
How It Works
Breast lift surgeries are performed using a series of very technical incisions. Your personal goals and anatomy will determine which type and placement of incisions used. Options include:
- Circumareolar Incisions, used for patients with mild ptosis (drooping), are made around the areola only and result in minimal scarring.
- Lollipop Incisions, used for patients with moderate ptosis, run around the areola and then vertically from the areola to the breast fold, resulting in little scarring.
- Anchor Incisions, used to correct significant ptosis, extend a lollipop incision horizontally across the breast crease. Scars can be hidden by natural breast folds.
Resizing and repositioning the areola
Enlarged, asymmetrical areolas with downward-pointing nipples are often a concern of patients considering a breast lift. Different incision types are used to correct unique concerns that allow the nipple-areolar complex to be resized and repositioned accordingly.
Breast Lifts, Augmentations, & Reductions
Breast lift surgery can be a good option for patients who want to preserve the volume and fullness of their breasts while making changes to the shape and elevation of the breast tissue or increasing breast firmness.
Breast lift surgery can also be combined with breast augmentation or reduction procedures. If larger breasts are desired, implants can be added to restore or increase your cup size. For patients with very large breasts, breast reduction surgery can further minimize the presence of loose skin and breast tissue.

Basic Breast Lift FAQs
Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?
Patients are good breast lift candidates if they have any of the following issues:
- Ptosis (sagging breasts) with enlarged areolas
- A loss of breast volume due to pregnancy/breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging
- Congenital conditions resulting in abnormally shaped breasts
Will a breast lift without implants make my breasts look smaller or larger?
The surgical process for breast lifts will not change your breast volume. It only affects the shape and position of breasts. If you want to change the size of your breasts in addition to their shape and position, discuss breast augmentation or breast reduction with Dr. Maman during your consultation.
How long will my breast lift surgery take?
Your time in the operating room will vary based on the complexity of your breast lift plan and whether you are combining your lift with other procedures. Generally, a breast lift takes 2.5–3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. A breast lift (or mastopexy) is an outpatient surgery and you will be able to return home with an adult caregiver the same day.
Is an areola reduction/repositioning part of my breast lift procedure?
Because all the incisions used in a breast lift involve the areola, reducing the size of the areola and, if needed, positioning it higher on your breast is part of the breast lift procedure.
Will I lose sensation to my breasts if I have a lift?
The risk of losing sensation in breasts following breast lift surgery is low, although some patients may experience temporary numbness in the nipple and breast following surgery. It is important to discuss your individual risk during consultation.
How can I minimize scarring after my surgery?
We provide you with detailed scar treatment protocols, medical-grade creams, and tapes that minimize scarring. If additional scar treatments are needed, we recommend that you wait at least six months after surgery and only use modalities approved by our practice.
How long does recovery take?
We recommend at least 3 to 5 days of rest before returning to work or other activities. After one to two weeks, your stiffness and soreness will have lessened significantly, but feeling better and being healed are not the same thing.
To reduce your bleeding risk and maintain your results, it is important to avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks.
How soon after my breast lift can I work out?
You can resume lower body exercising (spinning, walking, etc.) in one or two weeks as long as you are feeling well and are careful. Significant upper body workouts like yoga, weight lifting, and core training should be avoided for four to six weeks after surgery.
Will my nipple sensation change after a breast lift?
Fewer than 10% of breast lift patients experience permanent paresthesia, or a change in nipple sensation. It is common to temporarily lose sensitivity after your surgery, but most patients regain feeling within three to six months.
I’m not done having children. Will I still be able to breastfeed if I have a breast lift?
There is a very low risk that having a breast lift will impact your ability to breastfeed.
You should communicate your concerns about breastfeeding to Dr. Maman so that your surgery plan allows for maximum preservation of your nipple ducts and central breast mound. It is also important to realize that breastfeeding after your breast lift may cause your ptosis (sagging breasts) to return.
Once I’ve had breast lift surgery, will my breasts sag again?
Breast lift surgery is an excellent option for restoring youthful breasts, but its effects are not permanent. While a mastopexy’s benefits are long-lasting, you may need or want to consider a revision at a later date if you are concerned about maintaining breast youthfulness.
