What is Rhinoplasty?
The nose is both a prominent facial feature and a key part of the respiratory system—meaning that issues with the nose can be functional as well as aesthetic.
Contemporary rhinoplasty procedures require experience, skill, and nuanced aesthetic judgment. Our contemporary rhinoplasty surgical techniques, in-depth consultation, and attentive pre- and post-operative care help our patients achieve their desired results.
How does it work?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery that repairs internal problems, such as deviated septums, and cosmetic concerns, such as dorsal humps or bulbous tips.
Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
There are two surgical approaches to rhinoplasty.
A closed rhinoplasty technique reshapes your nose using two incisions inside the nostrils. This procedure is used for patients who only need minor corrections and reshaping of their nasal tip. Because the incisions are inside your nose, there will be no visible scarring.
An open rhinoplasty technique is performed from the outside of the nose. The surgeon makes a small incision on the columella—the tissue that separates your nostrils—in addition to the two incisions inside the nostrils. The skin on your nose is then lifted so the surgeon can see the nasal bone and the rest of your nasal anatomy.
An open rhinoplasty is more invasive than a closed rhinoplasty. Because it allows for advanced cartilage grafting and more precise repairs, an open procedure is recommended for patients seeking a dramatic cosmetic change or who need a rhinoplasty because of an injury.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is a very effective way to improve the balance and harmony of your facial features. Rhinoplasty is a good option if you want to:
- Straighten and smooth bumps or dips in your nose
- Reshape the tip of your nose so it is less bulbous, upturned, drooping, hooked, etc.
- Alter the contours of your nostrils
- Reduce the width of your nasal bridge
- Increase your nose’s symmetry
- Change the size or angle of your nose
Many patients are unhappy with their noses but also concerned that rhinoplasty will eliminate the personal and genetic characteristics that make them unique.
Our approach is designed to balance your aesthetic desires with your facial proportions, and our in-depth consultations and attention to detail produce optimal results.
Medical Rhinoplasty
The nose is critical to the function of the respiratory system, and an impairment or loss of function can have a serious impact on your daily life. Medical issues that can be improved with a rhinoplasty include:
- Sinus issues like a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates
- Repair to damage caused by accidents or burns
- Cleft lip or palate or other congenital defects
Medical rhinoplasty can improve airflow through your nose, reduce sleep apnea, help you recover from congestive colds more quickly, and enhance your sense of smell. It is also possible to combine medical and cosmetic rhinoplasties into one procedure.

Basic Rhinoplasty FAQs
Am I a good candidate for a rhinoplasty?
Good candidates for rhinoplasties have a nasal obstruction or breathing problems and/or are unhappy with the appearance of their nose and:
- Have completed facial growth
- Are generally healthy
- Do not smoke
- Have realistic expectations for their results
- Have chosen the surgery for themselves without pressure from anyone else.
Meeting with Dr. Maman for a rhinoplasty consultation is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate. He will work closely with you to choose the best way to help you meet your goals.
Where will my procedure be performed? How long will it take?
Dr. Maman usually performs rhinoplasty surgeries at an AAAASF-certified surgical suite. He also has operating privileges at Mount Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Englewood Hospital. We work with you to select the best facility for your needs.
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes two to three hours, depending on complexity.
How much does a rhinoplasty cost? Will my insurance cover the procedure?
Because rhinoplasty requires individualized treatment plans, pricing varies from person to person. Dr. Maman conducts a detailed assessment of your goals in your initial consultation and then provides you with an itemized price quote to help you make your decision.
Your insurance will not cover a purely cosmetic rhinoplasty. However, if you have a deviated septum or other functional breathing issues, your insurance may cover part of your surgery.
How long does recovery take?
Rhinoplasty recovery takes place in stages. At first, you may experience significant swelling. It may take several days for the swelling to subside enough to remove the splints and packing supporting your new nose structure.
You will likely be able to return to work and most daily activities within a week of surgery and exercise within three to four weeks.
While the acute healing phase only lasts for about a month, it is common to experience swelling periodically for up to one year. During this time, your nose will continue to settle into its new shape and its appearance may change slightly, but these changes will not be extreme.
When can I work out after my rhinoplasty?
Can my rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Combining surgical procedures can reduce both your cost and recovery time. We can generally combine rhinoplasties with both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. You may find that adding other procedures balances the changes made to your nose. Fillers, fat injections, fat grafts, facelifts, eyelid lifts, and brow lifts are common surgical companions to a rhinoplasty.
Will my nose still be unique after rhinoplasty, or will I look like everyone else?
Dr. Maman approaches each procedure with a commitment to your individuality. It is possible to improve the flaws that bother you or affect your ability to breathe without losing the specific traits that make you unique.
Dr. Maman will work closely with you to make sure you understand what is possible in your procedure and that he understands your concerns and goals.
Will a rhinoplasty require follow-up visits?
Because we value our patients’ health and satisfaction above everything else, we do not charge for post-operative visits, whether they are part of your detailed follow-up plan during the first year after surgery or the annual visits that we recommend to ensure your rhinoplasty result is maintained.
